It is so important to be willing to let things go.
Often in order to make room for the new we have to rid our lives of all that does not serve us. But even when we know what we need to do, we end up hesitating and putting off what needs to be done.
And in doing so we delay the new. Then we wonder why our lives aren’t changing or why good things arent happening.
The reason we end up holding on instead of letting go is because we’re scared to be without. We’d rather the comfort of what we know (even if it doesn’t benefit us) than have nothing whilst we wait for change to come.
That mindset comes from a place of lack and I think the best way to overcome that is to force yourself to be uncomfortable. Let go of the things that you no longer need in your life. It may be difficult to trust that better things will follow but the least can you for yourself is to stop holding on to all the that you no longer need in your life.
Sometimes we back down from situations because upon reflection we can clearly see that the reason we pushed on with vigor and enthusiasm is simple because you felt as though you’d gone too far to turn back.
Or perhaps, you just didn’t want to accept that you were wrong.
But other times we back down because we’re not willing to commit to the cause and take things all the way. It might be a situation that you know will be difficult to overcome but your fear has made you believe that it it’s not worth it.
As much as it’s important to know when to quit, it’s important to know when to keep going.
It’s more important than you might have considered.
When it comes to your opinions, beliefs and life plans, you have to be willing to change your mind.
You never want to be so set in your ways that you close yourself off to other options.
Sometimes when you’re so committed to what you know, it feels too difficult (or requires more effort than you’re willing to give) to change your mind. And so you hide away from information that could change your perception.
Or maybe you hide away from learning about what you could do to change your life path. You do this because once you know it’s possible for things to be better you’ll end up miserable if you never do anything about it. Yet you end up staying stagnant because you’re not willing to change your mind about the path you want to be on.
Change comes with risk and sometimes we choose security or familiarity over happiness.
Often we look at situations and systems that are in place and we hope for better.
We are able to identify there is a gap between where we are and where we want to be.
And even if you have no idea how to bridge the gap, identifying it is the perfect place to begin.
You can then start thinking about how things could be better and what sort of changes should be implemented.
You can start asking useful questions like why certain things are the way they are and what can be done to change them.
Of course it is not solely up to you to make change as it would be impossible for one person to do it all. However, I think a bunch of individuals that are willing to hope for better than what we currently have is exactly what we need.
We need people that are willing to ask the right questions, people that are willing to say maybe we should try something different and most of all people that are willing to act even if they don’t directly benefit.

It’s really easy to talk the talk full of excitement and enthusiasm. But actually doing the things you talk about is a whole other story.
It’s easy to give advice when things are going well or tell other people what to do.
But what about taking your advice first?
Why not actually do the thing before you talk about it?
It’ll add some validation when you later recommend it to others and that might be what they need in order to listen.
When you’re trying to find a solution it can be easy to get stuck on one particular path. You want to believe that you can work things out so you trudge on hoping for the best.
Maybe you tell yourself that if things aren’t working out then you’re not working hard enough.
But sometimes the truth is you need a different approach to the situation.
It can be difficult to open up to a new way of doing things, especially when you’ve been trying one set way for so long.
However, if you’re willing to do something different even if it doesn’t solve the problem, you’ll probably find yourself closer to the solution.
That’s what’s painted at the platforms edge.
I suppose now is the best time to add the disclaimer that this isn’t about jumping.
The message painted on the platforms edge can be used in conversations about the distance between where you are and where you want to be.
The gap is the space between the known and the unknown and I’ve recently found myself in it which is why I thought I’d write about it.
When you transform your life looking it creates space between you and your past self, sometimes to the point where it doesn’t even feel like you, it’s like a whole different person.
You’re now on the other side of the gap looking back.
It’s like when you’re going through a difficult period and can’t see how to make things better. Then weeks, months or years go by and all of a sudden you’re looking back thinking ‘oh, I actually did it!’. You went from hopeless to hopeful from ‘blah to ta-da!’.
But it’s rare that we see the change happening whilst we’re in the gap and it’s hard to see how to we can overcome it from the other side.
The gap is wide.
For anyone looking to change their life the gap may seem too wide. The space in between is full of trial and error, vulnerability, taking chances and commitment. You can’t get to other side unless you’re willing to go through those things.
So if you’re not willing, mind the gap.
Implementing good habits into your life can be difficult and so you might be put off from making changes in your life.
However the simple thing that might not have occurred to you is that you can try to make a good habit easier to keep up with.
It could be as easy as placing a glass of water at your bedside every night and carrying a refillable bottle with you where ever you go.
Downloading a guided meditation that you can listen to offline and setting your morning alarm with a note that reads ‘meditation time’ as a prompt.
Creating an evening ritual of preparing lunch for the next day whilst listening to a podcast at a set time daily.
Think about how you can arrange your day to make the habit you want to start practicing a seamless part of your routine.
Once you do that you’ll notice things get a little easier as long as you’re committed and willing to try.
An important step in achieving the dream life is tending to it. Its like with gardening, you need to do more than just plant seeds. You need to space them the right distance apart, water them or maybe give them something to grow against.
A dream you do nothing with is likely to just remain a dream. But I think by tending to it you’re more likely to actually get it in some way or another.
And maybe that’s a scary thought, actually attaining what you truly want. But what do you have to lose, worst case scenario you end up back where you started with the knowledge that you took a risk to make it happen because you were willing to try.
