That thing you’re avoiding

How is it we allow ourselves to be overwhelmed and consumed small simple tasks? Something that could take 10 minutes becomes challenging and scary. So, you put it off and tell yourself that you'll do it later, that you'll do it when you feel less afraid or less overwhelmed. Meanwhile the feelings won't go away … Continue reading That thing you’re avoiding →

Why you’re not inspired to write

Often when it comes to periods where I'm less inspired to write, the problem has nothing to do with writing. For example, if you're busy and overwhelmed throughout the day, when it comes to sitting down to write in the evening it's difficult. It's not that you're not inspired but instead that your mind is … Continue reading Why you’re not inspired to write →

What matters most?

When it comes to what is important sometimes we confuse external pressures or expectations with what really matters to us personally. In doing so we end up focusing on and prioritising the wrong things. These external things could come from work, family or friends and they overwhelm us because we aren't clear about what we're … Continue reading What matters most? →

Does more choice make us happier?

A lot of people regularly find themselves overwhelmed. The possibilites in every area of life are growing more and more each day. There was a point in time where what you ate was limited to what you could kill and what you could grow at that time of year. On one hand having more choice … Continue reading Does more choice make us happier? →

The falsehood of rushing

We're tricked into believing that the quicker we go the more we are able to get done. Upon reflection this is often false. The more you rush the more you end up overwhelmed and in a flurry. You're more likely to make mistakes that set you back, to the point where it may have just … Continue reading The falsehood of rushing →

How to stop feeling so overwhelmed?

The answer is in the question. Stop. The feeling of being overwhelmed often comes when we don't allow ourselves to feel something and instead adopt a go, go, go mindset. Self help

Perhaps when you were young, someone taught you that when you feel overwhelmed, step away and give yourself a moment. Maybe you grew up practising that and maybe you didn't. If you didn't you might find that as an adult when you feel overwhelmed you don't quite know how to handle it. The feeling might … Continue reading Self help →

Reading back through these posts I'm reminded of the situations that inspired me to write them. I love that my most popular post from February 2022 was my valentines day post. Hoping to be back posting a little bit more this year, starting with a roundup of my most popular posts from each month of 2022. I was first introduced to Neuro-Linguistic Programming around 6 years ago when I had a conversation with a life coach. I'd never even heard of a life coach prior to this but I remember her speaking about NLP and I was really intrigued. A little while after I bought this book. It opened me up to different ways of thinking, some of which felt quite radical at the time but are very normal to me now. After almost 3 years of daily blogging, here are a few things that I found helpful. Some thoughts I had after a week of struggling to write. For me, looking back on old poems is like looking through a photo album. I write poems about life but also the people that have impacted me in some way. Years later, I can look back and remember those moments which I think is pretty special. The poems I have are from the past 8 years and so some of the people I've written about are no longer in my life but I love that I'm able to capture the memories in words. So this is something quite relevant in my life at the moment. We often confuse what we're thinking about with what's important which is only sometimes true. You might find yourself consumed with thoughts of a time you felt embarrassed and end up thinking that it really matters. If you're not sure whether something is important, ask yourself whether it matters in the grand scheme of life and death. More often than not, the answer is no. We often put so much pressure on ourselves to be simple and live simple lives (in terms of having everything go to plan). The truth is people are complex and so is life but that isn't a bad thing.
