It’s easy to stick with what you know especially when it works.
But sometimes it’s good to try something new, explore uncharted territory.
Not just because what you’re used to isn’t working but because there’s is so much out there.
Trying new things help broaden your perspective.
Plus, how can you talk about how great something is when it’s the only thing you’ve tried.
Granted what you already know might turn out to be the best option but it doesn’t mean that alternatives aren’t worth exploring.
Don’t be afraid to try something new.
So here’s the truth, you’re not going to always feel like doing the thing that needs to be done. And if you wait until you feel like doing it, it may never get done.
You have to find a way to commit to doing the work wholeheartedly so that you’re not reliant on how you feel in order to get it done.
Once you manage that you’ll see things start to change. You’ll also be better at creating new habits.
If you never feel like studying you might fail your exam.
If you rarely feel like doing the dishes, you’ll run out of plates and your place will be a mess.
If you hardly feel like going to work, you might end up getting fired.
Instead of focusing on how you feel about doing it, focus on why you’re doing it.
You’re studying so that you can get good grades in order to get onto a particular course for a particular career.
If your why isn’t enough to get you to do what needs to be done, then maybe you should try ding something else.
It is so easy to get carried away.
There are lots of things that you could be afraid of but it doesn’t mean you should be.
I find that the more you focus on fear the more you amplify it until all of a sudden you’re having heart palpitations over something that would be better off as a passing thought.
There’s so much more to you and your life than the things you’re afraid of.
And sure it’s easier said than done but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t at least try.
If you feel discouraged with where you’re at you have two options.
The first is to quit and the second is to stick at it.
Whichever option you choose commit to it wholeheartedly.
If you think about it, there really isn’t much point going after your dreams (or the thing that you’re telling everyone is your dream) if you can’t even be bothered to give it your all.
People don’t often talk about quitting or deciding that they don’t want to proceed with the thing they have been working on.
I used to think that quitting was a bad thing, that it meant you were giving up, that you didn’t try hard enough and so on.
But with age and I suppose also experience I’ve come to realise that there are times when quitting is necessary.
Not everything that you try is going to work out, not everything you do will be a success.
And so you have to know when to quit because sometimes in quitting and closing the door to one thing you allow yourself to open up to something else.
How do you feel when you try something that doesn’t work?
One of the things that limits people from trying new things or just being themselves is not the thing itself but the feeling that comes afterwards.
That feeling of being exposed. Of all eyes on you and nothing to show for yourself. The thought of people knowing you tried and failed.
Especially when you already feel your own disappointment.
So, how about if instead of focusing on how bad it feels you focus on being kinder to yourself.
After all it might be worth acknowledging that you had the courage to try in the first place.
I often like to remind myself of Zig Ziglars popular quote ‘Anything worth doing is worth doing poorly until you can learn to do it well.‘
So, how do you execute a big idea when you’re just starting out. Or do you just put it on hold until you have more experience.
I used to think that it was best to wait because I didn’t want to look back on a good idea and see how much better it could have been.
But in doing that, I wasn’t allowing myself the room for trial and error, room to improve.
There’s nothing wrong in doing something poorly , it’s part of the process. Not everything you do will be perfect and treating things as so will only limit your potential.
So, if you have a big idea that you’re holding back on, now might be the perfect time to do something with it.
Some days are easier than others.
I have days when the words pour out with such ease that it can be hard to keep up. But I also have days when I’ll open my laptop to write and after 30 minutes I’ve gone back and forth on the same few sentences and I have a total of 23 words on the page.
But by posting daily I can’t rely on the days when it’s easy to write because those moments don’t come 7 days a week.
Instead I’ve taught myself to work through the days when the words don’t come as easy and still end up with something I’m happy to share.
I find that once I’m willing to try and write the ‘block’ eventually dissolves and out pour the words.
I’m experimenting with a different kind of way of writing. It’s less rigid and less forced yet still has a focus.
I’m writing In-flow, from a place where the words pour out simply and with ease. It makes daily blogging much easier and to be honest maybe it’s just a result of blogging daily for over 3 months.
It’s been over 200 days now, the writing habit is well and truly ingrained into my lifestyle.
But it feels good to be in a space where I don’t have to try so hard to come up with what to write. Every. Single. Day.
Everybody is going through something, you’re not alone.
It’s like that Pfunk song goes ‘I’ve got a thing, you’ve got a thing, everybody’s got a thing,
And so if each one of us has a thing that we’re dealing with alongside living our lives then we shouldn’t use that as an excuse.
It is so easy to use your life circumstances as the reasons why you can’t do the things you daydream about. You might find yourself saying or thinking:

I know it can get difficult (I’ve got a thing too, remember) but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t even try.

But as life would have it you can never get as far as you truly want and that’s the trick, you actually have to try.
