We are currently in the period where your new years resolutions may have fallen away and you’re now back to your normal (pre new years resolution) self.
It’s a common thing, it happens to everyone at some point, I’m certain.
It can get frustrating to feel like the person you thought you’d become this year might not be as feasible as you thought.
But a helpful thing to do is remind yourself that although it’s feasible it will never be as easy as simply wanting it.
So often we commit to the end goal but not what it takes to get there.
Go through your 2020 goals or resolutions and ask yourself what have I done to make this happen?
If you haven’t made much progress, chances are the answer will be nothing.
It could be helpful to reassess your goals and think not only about what you want but what you’re willing to work for.
It was a late Saturday afternoon and all that could be heard was the hum of the refrigerator, the occasional car drive past and the sound of rain on the roof.
It was almost silent, no music, talking or television. It was calming almost meditative. I sat on the sofa with my feet up, in a cosy argyle sweater that I’d bought second hand.
I felt an internal stillness and I felt at peace but I also couldn’t help but wonder why I didn’t allow myself to have moments like this more often.
The next day I indulged in silence once more. This time I was cleaning and had planned to put on a podcast or a playlist. Once I got started sorting, wiping and organising I realised how much I liked the quiet. It felt a little luxurious and just lovely.
It’s interesting that something so significant could come from something so simple. And what I liked even more is that it was unintentional. It wasn’t me forcing myself to be in silence which I think is why I liked it so much.
Shortcuts might be enticing but you can’t escape doing the work.
Write more than a post a day
You’ll have days when its easier to write so take advantage. I’ve had days where I’ve written a weeks worth of posts which is a stark contrast to the days where writing a single post feels as difficult as nailing jelly to a tree.
Dedicate a set time in your day to write
If you make it part of your routine it’ll find it’s way into your subconscious and then you’re set. My writing time is the journey to and from work. It’s around 90 minutes daily and I find it easier to use that time than make time before or after work to write. Granted I can and often do write at other times in the day but never as consistent as I do on my journey to and from work.
Don’t aim for perfection
You have to put more importance on having something to publish instead of it being perfect. I often refer to this blog as a writing practice because that’s what it is a place for me to practice writing. It isn’t a place for me to be perfect. I understand that perfection is a falsehood. Focusing on trying to make every piece perfect is a waste of time when you can just write something better tomorrow.
That’s all you need to successfully daily blog. There’s no trick to it. Sure, it might he hard to come up with ideas sometimes but the more you do it the easier it gets.
Life changing can be as simple as staying in bed for an extra 20 minutes or getting up on the first alarm.
When you think of life changing, what comes to mind?
We often get caught up in thinking for something to be life changing it has to be grand and spectacular. Travelling for 3 months, moving to a new city, quitting your job, winning the lottery etc.
But on the small scale we do life changing things everyday. Something like giving change to to a homeless man. You walk by, stop, find some money, hand it to him and then maybe smile and he’ll respond thanks or god bless (well the ones I see do anyway).
That small interaction could change your life but it could also change his.
Everything that we do has the power to change the trajectory of our lives.
You could attend an event and meet your new best friend, the love of your life (or the next few years), meet someone that offers you a job, learn something new or be inspired to start a new project.
On the other hand, you could stay at home.
It’s easy to be kind if you’re willing to care.
Small acts of kindness can allow you to escape your own mind long enough to remember that we’ve all got stuff going on.
I’ve had days where the kindness of strangers has been enough to totally transform my day.
It’s pretty amazing when you think about it. It can be something as simple as saying ‘Good morning’ or holding the door open for the person behind you.
It feels good when someone does it for you so don’t forget to do it for someone else.
It was towards the end of 2018 that I realised I was starting to miss the way I used to blog in 2012.
I missed the freedom that came from putting stuff out for me but also for you if you cared enough to read it.
But once I saw what blogging could become and started to try and get more involved in the blogging world things changed much more than I could have anticipated. I wanted to be a certain way but there was not enough room for the writer to express herself freely and suddenly too much importance was put on doing things the way they were supposed to be.
Blogging throughout the past few years was cool because I learnt a lot but I began to move further from my truth and closer to a version of what seemed acceptable or right.
So I created this as a way to strip things all the way back. Simple layout, no pictures, just words.
