I’ve recently been reading a lot of information about how the world of work has changed. It’s not what it used to be, not by a long shot.
I was reading things from perhaps around a decade ago and they’ve aged incredibly well because they still feel relevant today.
The general gist was that the previous model of ‘go to work, be compliant, complete tasks and go home’ doesn’t really cut it anymore. There’s no reward for compliance because that’s the minimum and it’s easy to find someone else that will follow the rules.
Instead, the way forward is ideas, innovation and change.
It’s no longer just about doing what you’re told.
How could things be different?
How could things be better?
How can we make what we’ve been doing for 5 years a little bit easier?
It’s about offering a suggestion instead of waiting to be asked.
So many people will complain and criticise but when the boss asks if anyone has any ideas, they have nothing to offer.
Often times companies do things a particular way, not because it works well but because it’s what they’ve always done. They might not know it but they’re just waiting for someone with a fresh perspective to come in and shift things. It doesn’t even have to be big change, it could be something they spent 30 minutes tweaking that everyone can use moving forward.
The interesting part is that the person that causes change is rarely the first one to notice the problem. Instead, they’re the first to speak up and offer a solution.
