I recently discovered a new podcast and listening to it brings me joy.
I find myself often relating to the conversations they have or smiling/laughing.
It’s so useful to fill your life with little things that bring you joy that you have easy access to.
Something extravagant like a week in the Maldives isn’t accessible to you on a regular basis.
You have to think small-scale.
A useful exercise is either throughout or at the end of the day write down all the things you did that brought you joy, then make a vow to do those things more.
It could be meditation, morning gratitude, getting a coffee in the kitchen with your work pal, listening to a particular song or podcast, reading a book, putting on a face mask, saying good morning to strangers on your way to the bus stop or train station or even going for a walk.
As humans we have a tendency to over complicate things but often it’s as simple as, whatever makes you feel good, do more of it.
The art of learning to laugh, at yourself.
Imagine you’re at a comedy show and the comedian is making a joke about someone in the crowd, you’d probably laugh along with everyone else (granted it was funny).
But what if the joke was on you, would you squirm or would you laugh.
So often many of us are unable to find the humour in our lives. It was something I used to struggle with but I’ve found that life is a lot smoother when you’re not so serious.
Even the other day I found myself laughing at something in my life that I’d have been really serious and furrow browed about 5 years ago.
And I could choose to remain furrow browed but it’s not as fun. I don’t think life should be taken so seriously to the point where you’re wound up like a super tight spirally thing.
I’ve tried it and it was terrible. That’s why I had to find another way.
If your skeptical, try it once and see how it feels.
Plus laughing releases endorphins, the brain chemical that makes you feel good.
Perhaps one of the most valuable lessons a friend has taught me is to not take life so seriously and to laugh more at the ebb and flow of life.
Life is totally different when you’re willing to be less rigid and laugh at your experiences. When you’re hard on yourself for simply being a human that goes through a variety of experiences, life becomes hard.
But when you laugh and remind yourself that it’s all just a collection of experiences then life somehow softens towards you.
